Celebrate Halloween at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. Legend has it that the Fort Fisher area is home to all sorts of ghosts of the past. Run, Scream, Survive!!! Brave the Fort Fisher Haunted Trail!

Be prepared to be scared on this Friday night maritime forest Haunted Trail! Wind through the spooky live oaks at the secluded Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. If you are brave enough to come face to face with scary legends of the past, this guided tour is for you.

We recommend this only for ages 10+. While we do not permit dogs on the trail, they are always welcome on the beach area.

The Ghosts of Fort Fisher

Visitors have long seen strange things in the Fort Fisher area.  A locked and barred door tends to randomly fling itself open and people hear footsteps on the wooden walkways when there’s no one in sight. An apparition is seen walking from the ocean to the fort, and some say you can still hear the sounds of battle over the ocean at night. Wet footprints have been seen, but not the feet that made them—and the impressions changed from bare feet to boots!

In the daytime, the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is a welcoming place, with nearly six miles of pristine beach and trails through salt marsh brimming with wildlife. The park uniquely touches both the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River. The Parks Service has protected the shoreline from development, and the area is often visited by birders and photographers.
